Old school 3D platformer

Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island is a traditional 3D platformer. Similar in style to Jak & Dexter and Ratchet & Clank, the game features a range of levels with a focus on jumps and simple combat.

Retro return

Despite the fact that platformers generally struggled with the move to 3D environments, some shining examples remained popular well into the HD era. Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island attempts to build on these modest successes by relying heavily on the partner-style originally made popular by Banjo-Kazooie. Skylar is aided by her owl friend Plux as she travels the land, jumping and fighting fairly typical enemies. The game does not stray far from the basic platformer mainstays and this certainly isn't a negative. It takes the best of previous games and puts them all together into a mostly coherent mess. Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island is a short game, however, with playthroughs only taking a few hours and little more to see in multiple runs.

Honest attempt

Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island is something of a mixed bag. It handles all the typical platformer elements well enough but also feels rushed and short. In a style similar to Yooka-Laylee's recent mediocre reception, it highlights the ageing aspect of the genre rather than its future.

PROS

  • Decent graphics
  • Competent platforming

CONS

  • Extremely short
  • Lack of overall polish
